Singing Tree Pottery - Kari Weaver Hopkins
pottery - altered and assembled baskets

Anyone can make a round pot. Kari Weaver Hopkins of Singing Tree Pottery cut up her first pot in college and for 15 years been unable to put the knife down. She starts all of her pottery on the wheel, then alters and assembles the parts into one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. Each piece begins with the fluid symmetry of the throwing wheel. She then cuts and assembles the pieces spontaneously. Her baskets are her favorite vessels to make, and she is aware of the irony that her maiden name is Weaver and that her baskets are not woven.
Kari received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics from Clemson University in 1996. In 2008, she relocated to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Her home came equipped with ample studio space, a show room and an 18 cubic foot gas kiln in excellent condition. Kari's work can be seen in several local area galleries and in private collections across the country.
Kari named her business Singing Tree Pottery after The Singing
Tree the children's book by Kate Seredy. When a
first-grader, the school librarian refused to let her check the book out until she
proved her ability to read it. The title stuck with her, and
as Kari is a bird-loving gardener, it seems to fit.
She participates in the
twice yearly Toe River Arts Council Studio Tours, and her gallery and studio are
open most days. Please call ahead 828-675-9780 or look for the flag on her road
sign if you're in the area. (Directions below).
